The Smaller House With the Bigger Glory

Haggai 2:1-9 · second coming hope

Haggai 2:1-9

Do you know what it feels like to make something small?

You build a little house of blocks. And then you remember a tower someone else made once, tall and golden, far better than yours. Your hands go still. What I made is too plain to matter, you think. Why even finish it?

That is just how God's people felt.

They had come home at last from far-away Babylon, and they were building God a house. A temple. A place where heaven could come close. But the old ones among them remembered the first temple, the one King Solomon built long before. Oh, it had been beautiful. Gold on the walls, cedar that smelled like a whole forest, rooms so big they took your breath away.

And this new one was small and bare and plain beside it.

The old ones looked at it and wept. Is it nothing in your eyes? they whispered. And they let their hammers fall.

But God saw them standing there, ashamed of their little house, and he could not bear for his children to feel that way. So he spoke. Listen to how tender he was.

"Be strong," he said. "Be strong, and work. For I am with you. Do not be afraid."

He said it three times. Be strong. Be strong. Be strong. Like a father cupping a sad face in his hands.

Then God made them a strange and shining promise.

"In a little while," he said, "I will shake the heavens and the earth and the sea and the dry land. And the treasure of every nation will come. And this small, plain house you think is nothing? I will fill it with glory. A glory greater than the first. And here I will give peace."

The smaller house, with the bigger glory. How could that be?

The people could not see it yet. They only had their plain stones and their tired hands. But God could see all the way down the years, to a day when the true Glory would walk into that temple's courts on his own two feet.

First a baby, then a boy, then a man: Jesus.

Jesus would stand inside that plain house, and he would be the glory God had promised, closer than gold and warmer than cedar, heaven come near at last. The little temple held the greatest treasure in the world, because it held him.

And God kept that promise. He came. The Glory walked in.

But there is more still coming. Jesus is building one more house, a final one, a shining one, with no more weeping in it. A home where God will live with his whole family forever, and wipe every tear away, and no one will ever feel too plain to matter again.

He has already begun it. You can feel the first of it even now.

So if you build something small today, and it starts to look too plain to matter, remember the smaller house with the bigger glory. God was never measuring your gold. He only ever wanted to come close.

And that last house is not finished yet. Jesus himself is coming back to finish it, and he is saving a room in it for you.
