You Meant It for Bad, God Meant It for Good

Have you ever had a day so bad you wondered if it could ever turn good again? A day when someone hurt you on purpose. A day when you cried where no one could see.

Joseph had years like that.

His own brothers, the ones who should have loved him, threw him into a pit. They sold him. They told their father he was dead. Joseph went down into a strange land, down into slavery, down into a dark prison for something he never did.

You would think that was the end of Joseph. The very worst day, stretched into years.

But God was keeping a promise underneath it all. A promise the brothers could not see. A promise Joseph could barely see himself.

And slowly, gently, God lifted him up, out of the pit, out of the prison, all the way up beside the king of Egypt, where Joseph could open the storehouses and feed a hungry world. And when a terrible famine came, the very brothers who had hurt him came walking into Egypt, looking for bread.

Joseph had wept over them once already, on the day he said, "I am Joseph, come close," and gathered them in. But now their father had died, and the brothers were afraid all over again. They huddled together and whispered, "What if Joseph still hates us? What if now he pays us back for everything?"

They fell down before him, shaking. "We are your servants," they said. "Please. Forgive us."

And Joseph wept.

He looked at his trembling brothers, and his heart was tender toward them, and he said:

"You meant it for bad. But God meant it for good. To save many lives."

You meant it for bad. God meant it for good.

The pit and the selling and the prison, every dark year of it, God had been weaving into rescue. Bread for a starving world, and a family kept safe and gathered close, with not one of them lost.

Joseph could not undo the bad. But God could turn it. He could take the very worst day and grow life right out of the middle of it.

And Joseph's words were truer than even he knew. Far, far ahead of him, there would be another good man, betrayed by people who should have loved him, handed over, carried down into the very worst day the world has ever known, all the way to a cross.

His enemies meant it for bad.

But God meant it for good. To save many, many lives. Yours among them.

God had said it would happen long before it did, and God always keeps his word. Even when the day is dark. Even when you cannot see the keeping.

So when your own worst day comes, the kind that makes you wonder if any good is left, you can know what Joseph knew, and more. There is Someone underneath it all, weaving, lifting, turning every dark thing toward good.

He turned Joseph's pit into bread for the world. He turned a cross into life for the world. And the good he means for you has a face and a name, and the joy of him will find you.
