The Joy of Jesus Bible

(Luke 15:1-10)
One day, the people nobody wanted came close to Jesus.
People who had wandered, people who had made a mess of things, people others whispered about and stepped away from, they all came near to listen, because something about Jesus made them feel safe.
And the important people frowned. "Why does he let THOSE people near him?" they muttered.
So Jesus told them a story.
There was a shepherd with a hundred sheep, and he knew every single one: the bossy one, the slow one, the little one that kept getting tangled in the thorns. At night he counted them, the way you might count the people you love before you fall asleep.
One night the number came up wrong.
Ninety-nine.
Some shepherds would shrug. Ninety-nine is a lot of sheep, almost all of them. "Close enough," they would say, and go to bed warm.
But not this shepherd.
To him, ninety-nine was not almost-all. To him, ninety-nine was missing one. And the missing one had a face. He could see it: out there in the dark and the cold, far from home, frightened, not even knowing the way back.
So he went.
He left the ninety-nine safe in the fold and walked out into the night, over the rocks, through the brambles, calling and calling into the dark.
Somewhere out there, the little lost sheep was shivering. Maybe it thought, deep down in its small woolly heart, "I wandered too far. Nobody is coming. Nobody would even notice I was gone."
But somebody had noticed.
Somebody was already climbing toward the very place it was lost.
And when the shepherd found it, he did not scold. He did not sigh. He bent down, gathered that trembling little thing up, and lifted it onto his own shoulders.
He carried it home glad. So glad he had to tell somebody. "Be happy with me!" he called to his friends. "I found the one I lost!"
Then Jesus told them the part the frowning men never expected: that is exactly how heaven feels about ONE. One person who was far away and is found. All of heaven, glad.
Jesus was not only telling a story about a shepherd. He WAS the Shepherd. Long before, a shepherd boy named David had sung, "The Lord is my shepherd." Now the Lord himself had come down into the dark and the cold of our world, to climb over every rock and through every thorn, looking for the ones who had wandered, the ones who were ashamed, the ones who were sure nobody would come.
Looking for you.
God does not count the way we count. He will never look at his children and say "ninety-nine is close enough." He cannot rest while even one is missing. He is gathering a whole family, and he means to come home without leaving a single face behind.
So if you ever feel far away, too far, too lost, picture the shepherd out on the dark hills with one small sheep riding high on his shoulders. That is what God is like.
And Jesus had one more story ready, about a father who stood at his door every day, watching a long, long road.
