The Joy of Jesus Bible
John 3:1-21 · brokenness rescue
There was a man named Nicodemus. He was a grown-up. An important one. People stood up straighter when he walked by, and the children grew quiet.
Nicodemus knew so many things. He knew the rules. He knew the prayers. He knew which day was which, and what each one was for.
But do you know what he did not know?
How to stop being afraid on the inside.
So one night, when it was dark and no one could see, Nicodemus went to find Jesus.
The daytime felt too bright for his questions. The day was for important men who had it all figured out, and Nicodemus did not have it figured out. Not really. So he came in the dark, where the wondering wouldn't show on his face.
He found Jesus, and he said, "Teacher. We know God is with you. No one could do the things you do unless God were near."
And Jesus looked at him. Right at him. At the tired, careful, frightened heart hiding behind all that important.
Jesus said, "Nicodemus. To see the kingdom of God, a person has to be born all over again."
Born again? Nicodemus blinked. "But how? A grown man cannot become a baby and start over. I am already old."
He thought Jesus meant: try harder. Be better. Climb higher. He had been climbing his whole life, and his arms were so tired.
But Jesus meant something else entirely. A baby does not push and decide to be born. A baby is born because someone bigger, someone outside, brings it to life. You did not make yourself the first time, and you cannot make yourself new the second time either. Being born again is a gift God gives.
This was the part Nicodemus had never heard, in all his years of knowing things.
Then Jesus reminded him of an old, old story. Long before, in the wilderness, when God's people were bitten by snakes, Moses had lifted a bronze snake high on a pole, and everyone who looked up at it lived. "The Son of Man must be lifted up like that," Jesus said, "so that everyone who looks to him will live."
And then Jesus told him why.
God so loved the world. This very world: the broken, frightened one, full of grown-ups hiding in the dark with questions they are ashamed to ask. God loved that world so much that he gave his only Son, to rescue it and carry it home.
"I did not come to tell the world how bad it is," Jesus said. "The world already feels that, there in the dark. I came so that no one has to stay lost. I came so you could live."
Nicodemus had walked there in the night. But something had begun to glow.
He came as a man who knew everything and could fix nothing. And he met a love that did not ask him to fix one single thing first. A love that simply said: come, and I will make you new.
When Nicodemus started home, the sky was still dark. But he did not walk like a frightened man anymore. He walked like a man carrying the best news in the world, holding it carefully, all the way to his own front door.
