The Joy of Jesus Bible
Psalm 2 · promise keeping
(from Psalm 2)
One dark day, the kings of the earth got together,
strong and proud men with armies and crowns and angry faces.
They stood in a circle and they growled,
"Let us break free.
Let us throw off the One who made us.
Let us pull him down. Let us be the bosses now."
They shook their fists at the sky.
They were very, very sure of themselves.
And the One who sits above the sky
did something they never expected.
He laughed.
It was the laugh of a father watching his littlest one
puff out his cheeks and shout, with a wooden spoon for a sword,
"I am the king of this whole house!"
For the kings could not push God off his throne.
You cannot push the sky out of the sky.
You cannot shout the sun back down once morning comes.
But God was not only laughing.
God was holding something close to his heart:
a promise, a plan he had loved for a long, long time.
Long before, he had promised David the shepherd-king
that one of David's own family would wear the crown forever.
And now he said, in a voice that hushed every storm:
"I have set my own King on the holy hill.
I have chosen my Son.
Listen to him. He is mine.
And I will give him the whole wide earth,
every hill, every sea, every faraway land,
all the children in all the lands,
because I love him,
and because I love them."
So the loud men were not in charge after all.
A Son was coming,
a King the world had not met yet,
but God had known him forever.
When that King finally came,
he did not come stamping.
He came small, like you.
He came into a loud, unfair world
where proud men still shook their fists.
They tried to push him down too,
all the way down, onto a cross.
But you cannot push God's King off his throne.
Three mornings later he stood up,
alive, and shining, and good.
The kings had plotted.
And God had laughed,
and kept his promise to the very end.
So when the big, loud voices make you feel small,
when it seems the angry ones are winning,
remember the laugh of your Father in heaven,
and remember the gentle King he crowned.
He is your King now.
His kingdom has already begun, hidden like a seed, growing in hearts like yours.
And one day he will come back over the hills,
and every proud, stamping voice will go soft as a whisper,
and he will gather his whole family home,
not missing a single one.
He promised it long ago,
and he keeps every promise he makes.
