The Joy of Jesus Bible
Matthew 5:1-12 · upside down kingdom
(Matthew 5:1-12)
You know how the world keeps a list of who wins?
The strong ones, the loud ones, the ones who never cry and never lose and never come in last. The world cheers for them. The world points and says, "There. Those are the happy ones."
But one day Jesus climbed a green hillside and sat down in the grass. And the people came close. They were not the shiny, winning people. They were the tired ones, the sad ones, the ones the world had walked right past without even seeing. Some of them may have sat at Levi's table not long before, on the night that tax collector filled his house with everyone the town had given up on.
And Jesus looked at them, really looked, with such love.
Then he opened his mouth and made a list of his own. A happy list, a blessed list, and oh, child, it was upside down.
"Blessed are the ones with empty hands," he said, "the ones who know they need God. The kingdom of heaven is theirs."
Theirs? The empty-handed ones? Yes. Theirs.
"Blessed are the ones who cry," he said. "They will be held. They will be comforted."
"Blessed are the gentle ones, the ones who never push to the front of the line. The whole wide earth will belong to them one day."
The crowd leaned in. This was not how the world talked. Not at all.
"Blessed are the ones who ache to see things made right," Jesus said. "They will be filled, all the way up."
"Blessed are the kind ones. The clean-hearted ones. The ones who make peace instead of war. They will see God. They will be called his very own children."
Every name on Jesus' list was a name the world had crossed off: the last ones, the little ones, the looked-over ones. And Jesus said, "You. You are the blessed ones. The kingdom is for you."
The man saying these words was about to live every single line of his own list. He would have empty hands. He would weep. He would stay gentle even when they hurt him. He would make peace by giving himself away. He would go all the way down, lower than anyone has ever gone, all the way to a cross. That is how his kingdom comes: down, and down again, to gather the down-low ones into his arms.
So if you have ever felt small, or sad, or last in line, lean in close and hear it. Jesus made his happy list with you in mind. He sees you. He picks you. He loves you as if you were his only one, and he loves every single one of his children exactly that much. Of all the lists the world has ever kept, his is the one that lasts.
His kingdom, that upside-down place where the last are first and the crying ones are comforted, has already begun, like a seed growing in the dark ground, and one day every tear will be wiped away and the gentle ones will inherit the whole wide earth.
And Jesus was not done talking on that hillside. He had one more surprise for the tired faces looking up at him, about salt, and light, and a little city shining on a hill.
