The Joy of Jesus Bible

The Half-Hour of Holy Quiet

Revelation 8:1-5 · gods heart

Do you know the kind of quiet that comes when everyone is listening for one thing?

Heaven knew that quiet once.

John was given a window into heaven. He saw bright things and burning things, and a throne, and singing that never stops. Heaven is loud with gladness, child. The angels are always praising. The living creatures never grow tired.

Then the Lamb opened the last of the seven seals, and all of heaven went still.

The singing stopped. The praising hushed. Every bright wing folded. For one half-hour the whole of heaven held its breath, still as a house at night, still as the moment before someone you love says your name.

Why? Because of you.

An angel came and stood at the golden altar, and in his hands was a golden bowl, a censer for carrying smoke and prayer. And another angel poured into his hands something heaven had been keeping safe.

It was prayers, little one. Prayers.

Every prayer that ever rose from a small frightened heart. The ones you whispered in the dark when you thought no one was near. The ones you had no words for, only tears. The thank-yous and the helps and the I'm-sorrys. The prayer you forgot you prayed. The prayer you were sure had floated off into nothing.

Not one of them was lost.

You may have wondered, sometimes, if your prayers are too small. If they go up like a wisp of breath and just disappear. If God is too busy with bigger things than you.

But heaven went silent for those prayers. Heaven stopped its singing for them. The angel held them like the most precious smoke, and the fragrance rose up and up, sweet before the throne, every one remembered, every one kept.

They were kept because of Jesus. He is the one who carries your prayers up to the Father. He gathers them in his own hands, every wisp, every tear, every whisper, and he makes them sweet, and he lifts them home. Not one of them slips through his fingers. That is the heart of your Father, leaning close to hear you, the way you lean in when your own child finally speaks.

And then the angel filled the golden bowl with fire from the altar, fire warm with all those prayers, and poured it back down to the earth, with thunder and lightning and a shaking. Your prayers came back as power. The longing of God's children, gathered up, became the answer rolling toward the world.

There is a day coming when every wrong thing will be made right. And the prayers you prayed, the small ones, the tired ones, are part of how it comes. That day began its coming the morning Jesus rose from the grave, and it is rolling toward you still, the day when every prayer is answered at once and God himself wipes away every tear, near enough now to sound like thunder you can almost hear.

Your every prayer is safe in his hands, kept in gold, carried by Jesus all the way home.
