The Joy of Jesus Bible
Luke 22:39-46 · gods heart
Do you know a place you go when your heart is heavy? A corner all your own. A spot under the covers. A garden, maybe, with the moon coming up over the trees.
Jesus had a place like that. A garden of old olive trees, just outside the city. He had just come from the Passover table, where he lifted the cup of the new promise, and now he walked out under the night sky with his friends, the way he often did. But this night was different.
This night, Jesus was afraid.
It was a big afraid, the kind that does not go away when someone turns on the light. He knew what was coming in the morning. He knew about the cross, and all the pain, and all the dark, and all the being-far-from-his-Father that he would carry there.
And his heart was so heavy he could hardly breathe.
"Stay close," he told his friends. "Pray with me." Then he walked a little way off, all by himself, and knelt down on the cold ground.
Even Jesus, who calmed the storm, who held the whole wide world in his hands, knelt in the dark and shook.
He prayed. And the name he called God was Father. The way you run to your daddy when you are scared in the night. That is how close Jesus was to God. That is the name his fear reached for.
"Father," he said, "if there is any other way, please. Take this cup away from me. I do not want to drink it."
He meant it with all his heart. He prayed so hard that the sweat fell from him like drops of blood. He was asking the Father to find another way.
Then Jesus prayed once more. "But not what I want," he said. "What you want. Your will be done."
That was braver than fighting any giant. He was so afraid he could hardly stand, and still he trusted his Father. Still he said yes.
Because he knew his Father's heart. He knew how much the Father loved you, and how the Father longed to have you safe and home and gathered in, more than anything in the world. And Jesus longed for it too.
So with shaking hands, he reached for the bitter cup. He would carry all our being-far-from-God, so that you would never have to.
When he stood, an angel had come close to make him strong. He went back to his sleepy friends and woke them gently, for the morning was near.
Long, long before, in another garden, the very first people had hidden from God, afraid and ashamed. But here, in this garden, the true Son did not hide. He knelt right out in the open and whispered, Father, your will, not mine.
So if you are ever so afraid you can hardly breathe, remember the garden where Jesus cried. He knows. He has been there. And even there, trembling in the dark, he was saying yes, because the rescue was coming, and it had your name on it. You are his, and he would not turn back until you were home.
