The Joy of Jesus Bible
1 Peter 2:9-10 · already not yet
(a letter, from 1 Peter 2:9-10)
Long ago, a man named Peter sat down to write a letter.
He did not send it to kings or to famous people. He wrote to people who felt small, who had been pushed out, laughed at, left on the outside. People who lay awake at night wondering whether they mattered to anyone at all.
Maybe you have felt like that. Like a nobody. Like you could slip out of a room and no one would even look up.
Peter knew that feeling from the inside. Long before, on a cold night by a fire, he had said three times that he did not even know Jesus, and then he went away and cried. And Jesus came looking for him anyway, on a beach at breakfast time, and gave him his name back. So when Peter writes what comes next, he is writing about himself as much as about you.
You are chosen.
Not the leftover, not the last one picked. God reached out his hand and chose you on purpose, the way you would choose the most precious thing in the house and hold it close.
And now God has names for you. His own. His treasure. Part of his royal family, with a place at his table that no one can ever take away.
Once you were nobody, Peter said. But now you are God's people.
Once no one had shown you kindness. But now you are wrapped up in more kindness than your two arms can hold.
There was a time you lived in the dark. The cold kind of dark, where you cannot find the door and you feel so alone. God could not bear to leave you there. He never could. So he called your name into the shadows, the way a father stands on the porch at dusk and calls his child home for supper.
Come out, he said. Come out of the dark.
And he brought you into his light, warm as morning, the light where you can finally see his face and see that he has been smiling at you all along.
God does not gather a family and leave anyone outside. He goes back into the dark again and again, calling and calling, until every lost and lonely one is found and brought home. He will not come home missing a single child.
Peter wanted those frightened people to know one thing most of all, and it is for you tonight too.
It has already happened.
You are already chosen. You are already his. The door is already open and the light is already on. God did not say someday, maybe, if you are good enough. He said now. Now you are my people. Now you are mine.
There is still more light coming, more than your eyes can hold yet, because the One who called you out of the dark has a face and a name. One day you will see him plainly, and you will know you were his all along.
His name is Jesus. Tonight he already calls you his own, and on that morning he will say your name where everyone can hear it.
