The Joy of Jesus Bible
Ephesians 1:3-14 · gods heart
Dear ones,
I am writing this to you the way you write to people you love. People who are afraid. People who lie awake wondering if they were ever really wanted.
Maybe you have wondered it too. That you just happened. A surprise nobody planned. A leftover.
Before there were any stars at all, before the sky had a single light in it, before the dark even had a name, God was thinking of you.
Not the way you think of a thing you might pick up someday, but the way you think of someone you cannot wait to hold.
He looked out over all that emptiness, before the first morning, before the first sea, before there was anything at all to see. And he chose you. On purpose. By name. He gathered you up in his heart and said, "This one. This one is mine."
Long before you were a child with a name, you were a longing in the heart of God.
God did not want an empty, tidy house with no one in it. He wanted children. He wanted a table crowded with faces. He wanted you at it, in the warm middle of everything, belonging so completely that you would never have to ask if you were allowed to stay.
And he made sure of it through his Son.
God looked at Jesus, his own beloved one, the joy of his heart, and he decided: everyone I love, I will love inside of him. Wrapped up safe in Jesus, like a name written in a book that can never be lost, handpicked and held and his.
So when Jesus came, and stretched out his arms, and gave everything to bring you home, it was not a sudden idea. It was the oldest plan in the world, older than the stars, older than time. God had wanted you the whole, whole way along.
And he gave you something to keep while you wait for the rest. Like a parent who slips a treasure into your pocket before a long trip and says, "Hold this. It means I am coming back for you." He gave you his own Spirit, close as your breath, saying it over and over: you are wanted, you are wanted, you are mine.
And you, lying awake in the dark: you were chosen before you could do one single thing to earn it. Before you were good. Before you were anything at all. He picked you because he wanted to, because his heart leaned toward you and would not lean away.
He loves you as if you were his only one. And he loves every child he has made exactly that much, and not one of them less.
He is gathering them all now, a whole family coming home, and he has already counted you in. That pull you feel toward home, that ache to be somewhere you are known, is him calling you in to the table for supper.
